The Czech Philharmonic performs at Berwaldhallen as part of the Baltic Sea Festival under Chief Conductor Semyon Bychkov. The concert will also be broadcast live on Sveriges Radio P2.
The evening opens with Dmitri Shostakovich's Violin Concerto No. 1 in A minor — a work shaped by the composer's fraught relationship with the Soviet regime. Written in 1947 for violinist David Oistrakh, it was set aside on political grounds and only premiered in 1955, after Stalin's death. The music swings between emotional extremes: from a dark, introspective nocturne through a manic scherzo to a deeply felt passacaglia and a final diabolical dance. The soloist is Dutch violinist Janine Jansen, artist-in-residence for the Czech Philharmonic's upcoming 131st season and a familiar and celebrated presence at Berwaldhallen.
The concert closes with Antonín Dvořák's Symphony No. 7 in D minor — one of his most dramatic and concentrated works, commissioned by the Royal Philharmonic Society in London in 1884. Though rooted in Czech musical feeling, Dvořák aimed here above all for a work of international stature. He wrote that the symphony "must be capable of moving the whole world." It was Dvořák himself who conducted the Czech Philharmonic at its very first public concert in 1896.
