The Nutcracker – A Christmas Story

The Prague National Theater Ballet will visit Tampere, Finland in November

This production by legendary Hungarian choreographer Youri Vàmose creatively combines the classic ballet The Nutcracker (based on E. T. A. Hoffmann’s fairy tale) with Charles Dickens’ novella A Christmas Carol. Set in 19th-century London, the story follows the transformation of the cold-hearted moneylender Ebenezer Scrooge after he encounters Clara and the Nutcracker on Christmas Eve. This successful production returns to the stage in a completely revamped form, enriched by brand-new sets by set designer Martin Černý and costumes by Barbora Maleninská.

This November guest performance builds on the National Theater Ballet’s nearly fifty-year history of performing in Finland, which began with a major tour to Helsinki in 1978. The ballet returns to Tampere with which the company has a long-standing relationship after nineteen years. It was here, in 2007, that this production of Vámos’s choreography was first presented to Finnish audiences. The current production, which is part of the celebrations marking the 80th anniversary of the Tampere Opera, is thus not only a return to a familiar stage but also a rare opportunity to present this timeless work in its new visual form.
